In the second half of the 19th century, Latrobe was a thriving town -- the most
important town on the north west coast -- until the railway went past in 1885
and focus moved to the port of Formby, which became Devonport. Many of
Latrobe's builings still reflect that era of prosperity and growth, including
the churches.
