re Jovial Carpenter hotel. I have sighted notices in the Cornwall Chronicle dated 1836 and 1838 relating to this hotel Cnr York and Wellington Sts. A visit to Launceston library revealed a map showing that address also.
Thomas Cowl appears to have become licensee maybe around 1833. He died 1835, with hearsay killed in a brawl , but I have found no inquest/court case to support that).
Jane Cowl was granted licence in 1836 and she married George Goldstraw in June 1838. They subsequently moved to near Warrnambool around 1847.
George Goldstraws application in 1846 for a hotel licence was denied under the name of Wheat Sheaf hotel, cnr York and Wellington St, so the Jovial Carpenter may have been renamed, but don’t know if the J.C. licence was relinquished.
Hope this is of some assistance. Robert Harris, Brisbane
