Pioneer Cemetery, Tullah

I don’t seem to be able to find out much about this cemetery, other than it exists and there are 3 headstones remaining (shown in above photo, really, and individually below). Some photos of the cemetery when the ground was cleared.

It seems to have been opened or transferred to council control in 1908, with a caretaker appointed the following year. A short newspaper story saysHugh Crompton, aged 12 years was buried at Tullah on 2 March 1907. Although it might not have been on this site or the location is wrong. In 1908, John Price was buried in Catholic section. No doubt the cemetery area was bigger than the space occupied by the three extant headstones.

    Shame on the Queenstown westcoast council that have responsibility for this historic site, they even sold the land that gave access to the site. Shame on Queenstown Council.
