St James Anglican Cemetery, Franklin Village

The headstones are located behind the church of St James on Hobart Rd, which was opened in 1845. From the LINC Tasmania’s guide to Launceston Cemeteries (PDf file), the first known burial here was William Hartley in 1843

I don’t seem to be able to find any transcriptions of the headstones online.

    Hello,
I am researching my husband’s family tree and he is a direct descendant of the Bartley family on his mother’s side. We live in England, which is where the Bartleys originated from , and then travelled to and from from Australia to England, so I was interested to see that in your post about the St James Anglican church , Franklin village, Launceston, that there was one readable headstone dedicated to the members of the family that I have only seen as names on paper! I was wondering if you had taken any more photos that you didn’t post , as although I can read the stone which is lying flat, there are two others either side of it which can’t be read in the pictures you have posted. However, even if you haven’t, it was wonderful to see the church which is mention so much in the family history and in a book written about one of the Bartleys from whom my husband is directly descended and maybe we will get to visit it one day ourselves. Many thanks

I do have some photos I took the other day. Although they’re black on black so not that easy to read, but I’ll edit them and add them to the St James entry on the weekend.

    Hello Monissa,
I have discovered that my 3xgreat grandfather is buried in the St James Anglican, Franklin Village, churchyard and am wondering if it is possible to see a photo of the gravestone? He is George Anderson and the plot is 321, 22 Nov 1911.
I would be grateful for any information at all.
    Many thanks,
    Janine Wood

There doesn’t seem to be one. I took photos of all the headstones last year and I can’t find it amongst those. Sorry.

(Unless you have some idea of nearby graves?)

Hi I visited my family grave here a few years back and notice you do not have a photo of the grave on your site they are the Illman family, and I have been checking all my archives on my family and know that The graveyard has 3 generations buried there, when I visited the grave it was intact but a family member visited this year and the front corner has been broken by someone driving over the edge, I live in Qld and cannot get there to fix it and I think it would be fairly major job, could someone help me please.Cheers Gary O’Donnell
