        Hello Monissa
I run the Wesley museum up at Wesley Uniting Church in Melville St Hobart. We also house and have the records for the Methodist churches in Tas either or site or at the State archives. All Presbyterian and Congregational records that joined with the Uniting Church are all part of us too….in saying that what have survived. Methodist records are stored in the series NS499. The other two denominations have other series numbers.

Oh, that’s good to know. I need to add a note about that on the site where people can find it.

Hello. You may find the burial record in our Methodist records currently stored at the state archvies of tas under the series of NS499. Go into the LINC page for state library and then click on search archives and then type in NS499 or do a search for cygnet.

I am trying to track the movements of my ancestor, Samuel Elliott, who arrived in Hobart in 1837. He was music leader of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Melville Street, wrote a hymn, and played the violincello. He lived at 75 Bathurst Street (now a post office, I believe) but died in 1863 in Franklin. I recently discovered there was a Wesleyan Methodist Church in Franklin at that time, so I’m wondering if he moved to Franklin to be music leader at that church. Do you know when it was built, and did the church in Melville Street close? Do you have any records of his movements for or with the church? I suspect he and his family may have been assisted or requested to come to Hobart (from UK) initially. His son, John Godden Elliott put in a tender to the Melville St Church for some work (I recall seeing it in a glass case at the church in 1975) but I’m not sure what that was for, or when dated. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
