Orkney Day 5: The Best Broch

The Broch of Gurness on the coast. It’s about 40 minutes walk from the nearest bus stop, so I’ve included some photos of the land around.

I think this road doesn’t see a lot of use.

The end of the headland is where i am working to. The island in the background is Rousay.

The broch was built about 100 CE (100 AD). It’s surrounded by an Iron Age village built later, and then walls. They think the broch might have collapsed at some point but was still used by the villagers

I did a video:

One of the houses. There’s a central hearth (the square bit), surrounded by smaller chambers and cupboards.

Smaller chamber and cupboard.

Into the broch

It also has small chambers and rooms.

Leaving 🙁

The site was used for about a thousand years. After the Iron Age village, Picts built houses on the site. This is one that was relocated away from the broch (it’s a central hearth area with rounded rooms opening off it.)

And a Viking burial site.

Walking back now.
