This is a simple site to bring together all my various bits and pieces. The  interesting bits are in the menus.

The images at the top of the site are from postcards I have.

  1. Hi,
Absolutely wonderful reading your article about the first hotels in Launceston. My ggggrandfather was George David Burgess, the licencee of the Black Swan. I have been searching around for a photo to much avail and was excited to see the 1885 photo of The Wilmot Arms, formerly The Black Swan. My mum is a Burgess. She will be very excited to see the photo.
George went on to own a number of pubs around Launceston throughout his life.
    Regards,
    Jim Brennan

  2. hello, I have been trying to find info. about hotel in early Launceston called ‘the Jovial Carpenter’. Licensee Thomas Cowl, (emigrated 1828), who is believed to have been killed 1835, (hearsay, in a brawl). Licence taken up by wife Jane Cowl 1835/36, my forebearer. Some mention in Trove digital papers. Believed hotel in Wellington st and may have been renamed as found no mention in your digging.
    great work. Dianne Greig, Brisbane.

    1. I only seem to have a note that it might be the same as the Carpenter’s Arms. Looks like it started in 1834 and my “year by year” working ended in 1833. I’ll put it on the to do list.
