The council published assessment rolls annually starting in the 1850s which, except for the earliest ones, list the occupier of the property. However, they’re sorted by street and they’re not available online. They also don’t have street numbers until late int he century because there weren’t any, but it’s usually possible to work out the location from the known buildings.

So, if you have a street you could get someone to look them up for you. (I note the birth for one of their children has them in Cimitiere St, that might be a place to start.) Also, it’s worth searching the newspapers on Trove for the names, as that sometimes gives their street, particularly is there is trouble with neighours.

If you contact the Launceston Reference Library with your query, they will happily look them up for you. They have all of the Launceston Assessment rolls printed out. As mentioned before, the street numbers changed a few times in the 1800’s before becoming what they are now in the early 1900’s if I remember correctly. The staff should certainly be able to track your relations and the house by its location within the street and adjoining landmark buildings eg. pubs. Their email is launceston.reference@education.tas.gov.au

Major Harvey Welman’s daughter married Captain Owen Ward at Holy Trinity Launceston on 25th May 1847. Harvey Welman died on 3rd May 1869 aged 86. How can I find out where he is buried as family members from the UK are visiting Tasmania in October 2017. Is he buried in a graveyard at Holy Trinity Church??

He is definitely buried in the old Cypress Street Cemetery in section A, Mr Welman’s ground. I am researching this cemetery, ready to publish in about 6 months the listing of burials

Thank you. Is it marked Section A Mr Welman’s ground. My niece will be visiting Launceston from the UK shortly. Do you know if Welman Street in Launceston is named after Major Harvey Welman. He lived in York Street.

Charlotte (Macdonald) Smith (1809-1838) and her husband John Grant Smith (d.1885) and their spinster daughter Amelia Macdonald Smith (1834-1910) were buried in the Scotch cemetery (now a park) Are there still headstones? I’d like to know if there are burial records and/or lair records…or how I can get a photo of the grave, if it exists.
